Mahn family tradition continues

When John Mahn sold his funeral home business recently, he left it in good hands. Family hands.

Taking over for John are brother David, son Joe, and longtime employee Todd Otteson.

"I am really happy for the three of them," John said. "They are doing a good job, and they will continue to do so. It's time to let them take over."

John purchased the Bodelson Funeral Home from Don and Edla Bodelson in 1986. Over the next few years, he bought other chapels including the Peterson Funeral Home in Lake City and the Mahler Funeral Home in Pine Island. Today the Mahn Family Funeral and Cremation Services owns funeral homes in Lake City, Zumbrota, Pine Island, Rochester and Red Wing.

Joe said he has worked for the family business as long as he can remember. He mowed grass and shoveled sidewalks when he was younger and by age 16, he was helping run services and driving hearses. He started full time when he graduated from college in 2005.

David runs the Anderson-Peterson-Mahn Chapel in Lake City and has worked in the area since 1991. Otteson is the funeral director and manager at the Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and has lived in Red Wing since 1993.

"We love our community," Joe said. "We want to take care of people. We want to help people through their most difficult times."
