Goodhue County schools receive state safety grants

On Oct. 1, the Minnesota Department of Education awarded safety grants totaling $25 million to 90 school districts and charter schools to be used for security and violence prevention.

Gov. Mark Dayton said the Safe and Secure Schools Act will provide $15.9 million to reduce gun violence and keeping students safe around Minnesota. The act also provides an additional $5 million for school-based grants that would provide mental health services to students who need additional support.

The funding is will be increased by $18 per student in each district, beginning in 2019.

Goodhue County school districts will receive the following funding:

• Red Wing: $104,976 (current levy) + $53,060 (proposed aid) = $158,036 (total amount)

• Pine Island: $50,976 + $25,488 = $76,464

• Zumbrota-Mazeppa: $49,723 + $24,862 = $74,585

• Cannon Falls: $44,179 + $22,090 = $66,269

• Kenyon-Wanamingo: $30,600 + $15,300 = $45,900

• Goodhue: $25,049 + $12,524 = $37,537
