Letter: Join Red Wing High School, Minnesota State College Southeast in honoring veterans

To the editor:

On behalf of Red Wing High School, we would like to invite local veterans and community members to be a part of our Veterans Day events this year. Red Wing High School, Hiawatha Valley Family Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and Minnesota State College Southeast are committed to the honoring of United States veterans and servicemembers and we have planned a special assembly on the morning of Friday, Nov. 9, 2018.

2018 marks the centennial commemoration of the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, so it is an extra important year to reflect and remember. This assembly is a means to help our students reflect on the sacrifices of our nation's veterans and servicemembers and thank them for their dedication to the United States of America. We are excited to invite our community to join us.

This year's assembly will include music by students from the high school and college, a recognition of our staff, student, and visiting veterans and servicemembers and a keynote address by Red Wing resident Maj. Jennifer Aasland of the United States Air Force Reserve. Born at Webb AFB in Big Spring, Texas, she is the fifth generation of military members in her family and the first to make it her life-long commitment. We are very excited to have her join us as our speaker this year!

Guests are asked to enter RWHS through the district office doors (No. 36) where you will be greeted by students and staff and escorted to our seating area on the gymnasium floor. There is an elevator available for those guests who need it. Students will begin seating at 9:20 a.m., so we would appreciate if we could have our guests of honor seated by that time. The assembly will begin at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments to follow.

We hope to see you on Friday, Nov. 9.
